L4W™


New concept in wind turbine lifts

   

L4WRVES Holding BV is a private, limited liability company incorporated in the Netherlands.  Our focus has been life- and fire-safety in high-rise structures.  We are developing LifeSlide® - an innovative and unique mass-evacuation system for saving a large number of people quickly from high-rise buildings and industrial structures during fires or other crises.  International patents are pending.

In order to construct working prototypes of LifeSlide® we created a functional lift system which incorporates all the safety features of our life-safety, fire-escape system.  When showing this to independent consultants, several suggested that our system would be of interest for use in wind turbines for routine maintenance worker access.

Consequently, we are optimising the design and development of L4W™ specifically for maintenance worker access in wind turbine towers.  By the time L4W production models are available L4W will be compliant with the relevant codes and standards in Europe & the USA.

 

L4W is an innovative elevator system for use by maintenance workers accessing wind turbines.  L4W can be installed in on-shore and off-shore wind turbine towers.  L4W comprises several key features that offer important practical benefits:

 

  • L4W is intended for routine use by one or two workers plus their tools.  It can be configured according to your design requirements in regard to the payload and physical form (as depicted in the graphics herein).
  • L4W is light and very compact, with a footprint only slightly larger than that of a worker climbing a ladder => it allows installation in narrow as well as large towers.  In the case of smaller wind turbines on masts it is also possible to install L4W externally.
  • L4W uses the ladder as its primary guide rail => provides compact, positive, stable, robust and reliable attachment while minimising the complexity and space required to install it during tower construction, and allowing the possibility for retro-fitting into existing towers.  Of course, if you prefer, L4W can be provided with tracks independent from the ladder.
  • L4W is simple and reliable – in the case of primary hoist failure, cable breakage or power outage during use L4W will by default return the occupants safely to ground/ entry level without occupant intervention.
  • Safety by default is integral in the design:
    • safe body zone – several alternative manifestations provide for the choice of physical form of L4W while ensuring that workers are contained safely within L4W during use, thereby preventing injury.
    • overhead protection – all manifestations of L4W provide hard, overhead protection to shield occupants from falling objects such as tools dropped from above.
    • return to ground – L4W uses robust, proprietary technologies (international patents pending) to return the lift and its occupants safely to ground/ entry level even in the event of failure of the power supply, hoist or cables.
